  • WHEREAS March 31 is International Transgender day of Visibility; and

    WHEREAS The Bridge and the Brantford Pride Committees invites all individuals to join together to make our local community a diverse, safe and proud city; and

    WHEREAS inclusiveness is embraced by the community to support the physical, mental, spiritual and social well-being of all its members including the two-spirit, transgender and gender diverse communities; and

    WHEREAS there is a need to recognize that a community is made up of many diverse and unique groups and that equity means a better life for all; and

    WHEREAS the two-spirit, transgender and gender diverse communities would like to annually observe this day as they and their allies strive to create a healthy and safe environment now and in the future;

    NOW THEREFORE BE IT REOLVED THAT the Council of the Corporation of the City of Brantford does hereby proclaim March 31, 2022 as Transgender Day of Visibility in the City of Brantford.

  • THAT the Clerk’s Report on Communication for March 2022 BE RECEIVED.

  • THAT Section 15.11.5 and 15.3.12 of Chapter 15 of the City of Brantford Municipal Code BE WAIVED in order to introduce the following Resolution without prior Notice of Motion and without having been considered at a Committee of the Whole or Standing Committee:

    WHEREAS The Corporation of The City of Brantford holds a charity event known as the Mayor’s Gala; and

    WHEREAS the 14th Annual Mayor’s Gala will be held on April 30, 2022; and

    WHEREAS net proceeds from previous Mayor’s Galas have been provided to local not-for-profit organizations which are deemed to be worthy causes; and

    WHEREAS Kids Can Fly is a not-for-profit organization that acts as a catalyst for change to support learning and parenting in our Community; and

    WHEREAS Kids Can Fly is committed to providing high quality, accessible learning and literacy programming to parents and families; and

    WHEREAS Kids Can Fly requires financial support to achieve their vision of assisting every child in the City of Brantford and County of Brant soar confidently towards their dreams; and

    WHEREAS City Council supports local programs and investments that would serve the betterment of the community for years to come;

    THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT The Council of the Corporation of The City of Brantford hereby DESIGNATE the net proceeds of the 2022 Mayor’s Gala to be provided to Kids Can Fly to support Kids Can Fly’s early literacy work, specifically Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and raising awareness of the importance of early literacy in both The City of Brantford and County of Brant.

  • WHEREAS Princess Elizabeth School is located in Ward 5;

    WHEREAS due to drop off restrictions, students must cross the street to access Princess Elizabeth School; and

    WHEREAS Princess Elizabeth School does not have an adult school crossing guard; and

    WHEREAS concerned constituents have reached out to both Ward 5 Councillors and the Mayor regarding the need for an adult school crossing guard at Tecumseh Street & Marie Avenue - Princess Elizabeth School; and

    WHEREAS correspondence for support to add an adult school crossing guard at the intersection of Tecumseh Street and Marie Avenue has been received; and

    WHEREAS the Brantford Police Services Board manages the adult school crossing guard program; and

    WHEREAS all requests for adult school crossing guards are evaluated through a Crossing Guard Study conducted by the City of Brantford Public Works Commission; and

    WHEREAS Tecumseh Street and Marie Avenue is currently supported by student safety patrollers; and

    WHEREAS City staff determined that an adult school crossing guard was not warranted for Tecumseh Street and Marie Avenue; and

    WHEREAS at its Board meeting on November 23, 2021 the Police Services Board did not approve an adult crossing guard at Tecumseh & Marie – Princess Elizabeth School;

    NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

    1. THAT an adult school crossing guard BE APPROVED at the intersection of Tecumseh Street and Marie Avenue to address the concerns raised by area residents, parents, and school representatives to provide safe and controlled crossing for students; and
    2. THAT the City Clerk BE DIRECTED to forward a copy of this resolution to the Brantford Police Service Board to reconsider the request for an additional adult school crossing guard at Tecumseh Street and Marie Avenue; and
    3. THAT upon receipt of approval from the Brantford Police Board, Public Works BE DIRECTED to install the appropriate signs and markings to implement a regulatory School Crossing in co-ordination with Brantford Police Services.
  • WHEREAS everyone  deserves to have safe, secure and appropriate housing that meets or exceeds property standards and Building Code Act requirements, among others; and

    WHEREAS even one is too many if living in deplorable housing conditions without necessary utilities such as adequate heat, hydro, and/or water, and/or subject to unhealthy housing conditions such as mold, pest infestations, and/or subject to unsafe housing conditions where necessary repairs are not addressed promptly and/or having nonfunctioning/broken safety systems such as fire alarms, locks, windows and doors, and/or illegal living conditions and/or violations of building code; and

    WHEREAS even one is too many if landlord are not providing essential housing services and repairs as legislated leading to derelict rental housing, either through ignorance or neglect; and

    WHEREAS even one is too many when renters do not know their rights as tenants, and/or do not know where to turn for information and assistance, and/or are afraid to address  poor housing conditions with their landlords; and
    WHEREAS information regarding tenant rights and responsibilities, property standards, legal supports, protected rental arrangements, the Landlord Tenant Board Tribunals Ontario (LTB) and other essential resources are not located in a centralized location that is accessible for renters to access.

    NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED

    1. THAT Staff BE DIRECTED to create an accessible and culturally appropriate Rent Safe Brantford webpage on the City of Brantford website that provides a centralized information hub for renters, with links to relevant services and contact information by Q3 2022; and
    2. THAT the Rent Safe Brantford webpage BE CREATED after Staff consultations with related service agencies including Student Unions, Brantford Regional Real Estate Association, Neighbourhood Associations, Shelter providers, Housing Resource Centre, Community Legal Services, and other interested parties; and
    3. THAT Staff BE DIRECTED to prepare and implement a communication strategy to promote the Rent Safe Brantford webpage; and
    4. THAT Staff BE DIRECTED to investigate and report back on proactive opportunities and programs that help make rental housing safer for tenants.
