  • WHEREAS childhood cancer is the leading disease-related cause of death for Canadian children aged 6 months to young adulthood; and

    WHEREAS in Canada, an average of 1,700 children and youth are diagnosed with cancer each year; and

    WHEREAS 83% of children survive cancer but more than 75% of these children face late side-effects such as deafness, blindness, growth issues, etc.; and

    WHEREAS there are more than 300,000 children worldwide diagnosed with Cancer who are being treated with drugs that were approved in the 1950's to the 1970's; and

    WHEREAS the types of childhood cancer are very different from those occurring in adults; and

    WHEREAS 'Help A Child Smile' is a local volunteer charity focused on supporting children with cancer at McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton; and

    WHEREAS the gold ribbon and the color gold has become the international symbol representing childhood cancer; and

    WHEREAS there is a global movement to light buildings, monuments, waterfalls, signs and fountains gold in September in recognition of childhood cancer; and

    WHEREAS in recognition of this initiative, the fountain located in Harmony Square will be illuminated in gold for the month of September as well as the Childhood Cancer Flag will be flown at City Hall;

    NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Council of The Corporation of the City of Brantford HEREBY PROCLAMINS the month of September, 2020 as “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month” in the City of Brantford.

  • WHEREAS World Suicide Prevention Day is a time to join with others across the world to declare our commitment to preventing suicide. To spread the message that healing is possible, and that there is always hope and a helping hand so that no one faces these challenges alone; and

    WHEREAS each death by suicide directly impacts numerous family members, friends, loved ones, and by extension the entire community. Every day approximately 11 people end their lives by suicide in Canada. Another 210 will attempt suicide. For each death by suicide, it is estimated that the lives of 7-10 bereaved survivors are profoundly affected; and

    WHEREAS suicidal thoughts can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, race, orientation, income level, religion, or background; and

    WHEREAS the stigma associated with suicide works against suicide prevention by discouraging individuals thinking about suicide from receiving life-saving help, and further traumatizes survivors of suicide; and

    WHEREAS suicide is a highly preventable tragedy. Awareness and open and direct talk about suicide is key to making Brantford suicide safer communities. Individuals and communities can work together to help prevent suicide by becoming aware of warnings signs and risk factors and knowing where to get help for individuals in distress; and

    WHEREAS we encourage all residents to take the time to inquire as to the well-being of their family, friends, and neighbors over the next few days and to genuinely convey their appreciation for their life by any gesture they deem appropriate. A simple phone call, message, act of kindness or gesture could help someone realize that suicide is not the answer; and

    WHEREAS we wish to honor and thank those who have given of their time to receive formal suicide prevention training, who have reached out to someone in their time of need, and to those who join us now to stand together beside those who have attempted suicide, who have struggled with suicidal thoughts, who have had a difficult journey, and to the family and friends of those who have died by suicide and feel the effects every day, we stand with you to say that you are not alone and that the Brantford community is here for you; 

    NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Council of The Corporation of the City of Brantford HEREBY PROCLAIMS September 10th, 2020 as "Suicide Prevention Day" and strongly encourage all members of our community to become educated, take all signs of suicide seriously, encourage conversations about mental health in order to break the stigma, and promote hope and help to everyone in our community.

  • WHEREAS Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) is an umbrella term that describes a range of disabilities resulting from prenatal alcohol exposure that persists throughout the lifespan; and

    WHEREAS prenatal alcohol exposure is the leading preventable cause of developmental disabilities in Canada; and

    WHEREAS the exact number of people who have FASD is unknown, a conservative estimate is that nine out of every 1,000 children are born with effects of prenatal alcohol exposure annually; and

    WHEREAS health, social, educational and justice systems are involved at the community and provincial levels, with the cost to Canada of approximately $5.3 billion per year; and

    WHEREAS approximately half of all pregnancies are unplanned, resulting in later prenatal care and possible unintentional exposure to alcohol; and

    WHEREAS community members, health and social service providers, and local decision makers all have a role to play in supporting pregnant women to avoid alcohol during pregnancy and raising awareness that there is no safe amount, no safe type and no safe time to drink alcohol during pregnancy; and

    WHEREAS people internationally have begun to observe International FASD Awareness Day on September 9 since 1999, so that on the ninth day of the ninth month of the year, the world will remember that during the nine months of pregnancy it is important to abstain from alcohol;

    NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Council of The Corporation of the City of Brantford HEREBY PROCLAIMS September 9, 2020, as “FASD Awareness Day” in the City of Brantford.

  • WHEREAS the Chamber of Commerce Brantford-Brant, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce have all joined Canada United, a national movement to support local businesses in communities across the country; and

    WHEREAS as part of the movement, RBC has brought together more than 50 of Canada’s leading brands, business associations and Chamber networks to rally Canadians to “show local some love” by buying, dining and shopping local and help kickstart our economy; and

    WHEREAS Canadians are encouraged to watch the Canada United videos online at GoCanadaUnited.ca, like posts from @GoCanadaUnited on social media and use #CanadaUnited to demonstrate their support so that each of these actions until August 31, 2020, RBC will contribute 5 cents, up to a maximum contribution amount of $2 million, to the new Canada United Small Business Relief Fund, while working with government and corporate partners to source additional contributions to the fund during the course of the campaign; and

    WHEREAS the Fund will provide small businesses with grants of up to $5,000 to cover expenses related to personal protective equipment (PPE), renovations to accommodate re-opening guidelines and developing or improving e-commerce capabilities; and

    WHEREAS the Canada United Small Business Relief Fund will be administered by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce on behalf of the national Chamber network and Small business owners who are interested in the program can visit GoCanadaUnited.ca or www.brantfordbrantchamber.com to learn more about grant application details, including eligibility criteria, and to apply;

    NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Council of The Corporation of the City of Brantford HEREBY PROCLAIMS August 28 to 30, 2020 as "Canada United Weekend" in the City of Brantford, and invites all citizens to join the Canada United movement by buying and dining local, including celebrating and supporting local businesses.

    1. THAT Report 2020-370 CAO COVID-19 Emergency Update 08.25.20 BE RECEIVED; and
    2. THAT Staff BE DIRECTED to maintain virtual Council meetings operations as outlined in report 2020-370 and present a report for Council’s consideration on a hybrid in-person and virtual meeting model prior to December 2020; and
    3. THAT the portion of the Employee Recognition Event in 2021 applicable to those who would have been recognized in 2020 BE FUNDED from the Council Priorities Reserve (RF0558) to a maximum of $32,500 for the awards and catering.
